Dr Isioma Okolo
MBChB MPH DFSRH DTMH MRCOG
Dr Okolo is committed to addressing healthcare inequalities within and between countries as a Consultant Obstetric and Gynaecological surgeon, global health researcher, and women’s health advocate.
She graduated from Harvard, the University of Edinburgh Medical School, and the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
Dr Okolo provides high-quality, empathetic, patient-centred, evidence-based, holistic care as a clinician.
Her clinical specialities are minimal-access endoscopic surgery, gynaecological ultrasonography, management of benign gynaecological and early pregnancy conditions, high-risk antenatal, intrapartum, and post-partum care, family planning, menopause care, and lifestyle medicine for women.
With over 13 years of comprehensive expertise spanning clinical care, research, education, public health, and global health policy, she has a proven record of leadership and strategic planning to improve health systems, quality and delivery of care, equity and inclusion.
In 2022 she completed two prestigious Harvard fellowships- the Paul Farmer Global Surgery Fellowship and the Connor’s Centre Global Women’s Health Fellowship. She has multiple academic, advocacy and creative writing publications.
As a global citizen having worked across Africa, the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East—her experience bridges low-, middle-, and high-income settings. She has successfully led initiatives to improve health outcomes in resource-limited environments, combining her expertise in clinical practice with cutting-edge research and a deep understanding of the complexities of global health disparities. Her extensive international exposure makes her a driving force in building more equitable healthcare systems worldwide
Dr Okolo is a prolific and compelling public speaker with local and international audiences, including Westminster UK Parliament, UN General Assembly, WHO World Health Summit, USAID GHTechX, Harvard Medical School and Oxford University, the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists ( RCOG), Scottish Patient Safety Program( SPSP), the National Health Service (NHS).
In 2021 and 2022, she was selected to be a UN Women UK delegate at the Commission on the Status of Women(CSW) -the largest intergovernmental meeting on women’s rights, empowerment and gender equality.
Inspired by this, in 2023 she organised and hosted Scotland’s first CSW NGO forum official parallel event themed ‘ Disrupting the Status of Co-Creation with Women of African Descent’. This was held in partnership with KWISA, University of Edinburgh and NHS Lothian.
Through advocacy, public speaking, and mentorship, Dr. Okolo is a powerful driver for systemic reform, aiming to create more inclusive healthcare systems that serve underrepresented populations. She sits on the Scottish Government Group for Racialised Maternal Inequalities and the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists Race Equality Taskforce and Faculty Combatting the Medicalisation of Female Genital Cutting ( FGC/M).
As a community organiser, she volunteers as the director of KWISA-Women of African Descent in Scotland and a trustee of AMMA Birthing Companions and THET Global Health Partnerships.
